About Pronouns in Urdu
Urdu pronouns (ضمائر) are a fundamental part of the language that reflect the deep cultural values of respect and social hierarchy in Pakistani and South Asian society. One of the most distinctive features of Urdu pronouns is the three levels of formality in the second person: تو (Tu) is the most informal and intimate form used with very close friends, small children, or in prayer; تم (Tum) is a familiar form used with friends, peers, and younger people; and آپ (Aap) is the respectful and formal form used with elders, strangers, and in professional settings.
Using the wrong level of formality can be considered disrespectful in Urdu culture. For instance, addressing an elder with تو (Tu) instead of آپ (Aap) would be seen as extremely rude. Urdu pronouns also change form based on gender and case — for example, "my" becomes میرا (Mera) for masculine nouns and میری (Meri) for feminine nouns. Unlike English, Urdu does not have separate pronouns for "he" and "she" — the word وہ (Woh) is used for both, with gender distinction appearing in the verb conjugation instead. Understanding these pronoun forms is essential for anyone learning Urdu, as they are used in every sentence and carry important social meaning.
