About Months in Urdu

Pakistan follows two calendar systems side by side: the Gregorian (Western) calendar for official, business, and everyday use, and the Islamic Hijri calendar for religious observances. The Urdu names for Gregorian months (جنوری، فروری، مارچ etc.) are transliterations of their English names written in Urdu script, and these are used in all government documents, newspapers, schools, and daily life across Pakistan. The pronunciation closely matches the English original with minor differences.

The Islamic Hijri calendar (ہجری تقویم) is a lunar calendar with 12 months based on the cycles of the moon. It is approximately 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, which is why Islamic dates shift earlier each year relative to the Western calendar. The Hijri months hold deep religious significance — رمضان (Ramzan) is the month of fasting, محرم (Muharram) is the first month and a period of mourning, ربیع الاول (Rabi ul Awal) celebrates the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and ذوالحجہ (Zil Hajj) is when the Hajj pilgrimage and عید الاضحٰی (Eid ul Adha) take place. Pakistan also experiences four distinct seasons: گرمی (Garmi - Summer), سردی (Sardi - Winter), بہار (Bahaar - Spring), and خزاں (Khizaan - Autumn), along with the famous برسات (Barsaat - Monsoon) season.
